Thesis Proposal

The goal of Zachary's thesis is to relocate the Science Center Research Park building in an active seismic zone in order to design a new lateral system. Research will be done on different types of lateral systems. Also, the concrete used in the building will be changed from normal weight concrete to light weight concrete to reduce the weight of the building.

Breadth Topic One:

Breadth topic one is a study on the scheduling and cost of the proposed change in the structure of the building compared to the existing building. Conclusions will be made on whether the new design is practical based on cost and constructability.

Breadth Topic Two:

Breadth topic two is a study on the building envolope. This study will explore the option of a blast-resisting facade. Hand calculations will be include for the blast loads, design of the blast-resistant glazing, and the thermal/lighting/acoustic effects for both the existing and proposed design.

Note: While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work‐in‐progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project ar e solely the interpretation of Zachary Yarnall. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design.
